Multi-Disciplinary Cyber Research

Cyber SMART
Making a Difference

Cyber SMART is a U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) Industry-University Collaborative Research Center (IUCRC). Initially established at Georgetown University in 2019 in response to industry demand for a new approach to cyber research and training; the Center’s name, standing for Science, Management, Applications, Regulation, and Training, reflects a new holistic approach.

Cyber SMART has since expanded to include the University of Notre Dame (2021), and Virginia Tech (2024) and in 2021 was accredited as an IUCRC by the NSF.

Cyber SMART integrates deep technology and social, behavioral, regulatory, and managerial dimensions of emerging technologies. This holistic approach addresses not only technical challenges but also the human, legal, and policy aspects of cybersecurity and related fields.

Cyber SMART strategically combines computer science and engineering with related social and economic sciences and behavioral and cognitive sciences to the full spectrum of cyber research. Cyber SMART’s unique capabilities in law, economics, finance, management, forensics, neuroscience, psychology, behavioral science, and ethics, and its world-leading expertise in computer science and engineering, combine to provide effective cyber solutions that address real-world needs.

This multi-disciplinary approach produces research that is focused and directly relevant to the public and private sector organizations that are the Center’s Members and their constituents and customers.

About the NSF/IUCRC Program

The NSF is a U.S. federal government agency that supports fundamental research and education across all fields of science and engineering. The IUCRC program was created in 1973 to accelerate the impact of basic research through developing close relationships between industry innovators, world-class academic teams, and government leaders.

People

Cyber SMART, like all IUCRCs, is designed to help corporate partners and government agencies connect directly and efficiently with university researchers to conduct high-impact research to meet shared industrial needs in companies of all sizes; enhance U.S. global leadership in driving innovative technology development; and identify, mentor, and develop a diverse high-tech, exceptionally skilled workforce.
